Department of Romance Languages & Literatures: Assistant Professor in Global Hispanophone Studies
The Department of Romance Languages & Literatures (RLL) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Global Hispanophone Studies to begin in the fall semester of 2024. We seek an exceptional scholar in literary and cultural studies whose research and teaching focus on global patterns and exchanges connecting the Spanish-speaking world across traditional historical periods, and border-bound geopolitical and geographical areas (including Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe, as well as the Atlantic and the Pacific). Within the field of Global Hispanophone Studies, we welcome applications from scholars with forward-looking research agendas and whose work engages different methodologies on categories such as race, ethnicity, gender, media, visual culture, and digital humanities. Scholars whose research engages materials produced before the 20th century are particularly welcome. We are especially interested in approaches to Global Hispanophone Studies that are in dialogue with related fields, such as African Diaspora Studies, Decolonial and Postcolonial Studies, Hemispheric Studies, Mediterranean Studies, Transatlantic Studies, and Transpacific Studies, among others.
Responsibilities include conducting and publishing scholarly research; developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; advising and mentoring a diverse student body; directing dissertations and participating in dissertation and exam committees; and other duties assigned by the University. The teaching load is two courses per semester. Candidates should have completed a PhD with a research focus on Global Hispanophone Studies by time of appointment. We expect the successful candidate to teach and conduct scholarship in both Spanish and English.
RLL comprises a vibrant community of scholars whose research and teaching are at the forefront of advancing the humanities at the University. RLL colleagues collaborate with interdisciplinary programs such as Latin American Studies, Global Studies, African and African-American Studies, American Culture Studies, Comparative Literature, and Film and Media Studies, as well as other departments and research centers across the University, to carry out innovative research and teaching projects. This new tenure-track position aligns with Washington University's commitment to build a world-class research program on race and ethnicity. Moreover, the new colleague will be eligible for substantive research support from the Center for the Humanities and the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity.
