THE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Director of Student Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Sarah Lawrence College works in a highly collaborative manner to facilitate intersection among all students and student groups to promote intercultural understanding. The Director advises students and supports student organizations as they explore their identities related, but not limited, to race, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, ability, language, spiritual/religious affiliation, citizenship, socio-economic status, gender identity, gender expression, and other aspects of their personhood.
Collaborating with the Director of Student Leadership and Involvement and reporting to the Dean of Well-Being, the Director will serve as a both a tactical creator and strategic leader who builds, maintains, and shares resources (tools, interventions, training opportunities, etc) that expand the capacity of all Sarah Lawrence community members to engage across differences. A successful Director will partner consistently and effectively with the VP and AVP of DEI to enhance student engagement and belonging in all aspects of the holistic student experience at a residential liberal arts college committed to promoting student and community well-being. The Director role is a 12-month, live-in position.
Essential Duties Summary
PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Advise students and student organizations in recruiting members, event planning, budgeting, and promoting events.
- Advise religious/spiritual, LGBTQIA, and student of color student identity organizations and publications, including student leadership development and training on ally-ship, and community development.
- Supervise student-managed spaces including Common Ground, Spiritual Space, LGBTQIA Space, Publication Space and the Food Sharing Space.
- Manage website information, Gryphon Link, and other internet/ intranet promotions.
- Represent Student Well-Being on various college-wide committees and at signature student events such as Celebrate SLC (Friends and Family Weekend), Admissions events, Commencement, Residential Opening & Closing.
- Design student-centered DEIB programming that focuses on enhancing student well-being more broadly.
- Partner extensively and inclusively with key college stakeholders, especially with the AVP and VP of DEI, to develop and implement strategies to advance DEI.
- Co-create and co-deliver, with the AVP and VP of DEI, student-focused trainings and curriculum
- Gather and share qualitative and quantitative data on the effectiveness and impact of DEIB-oriented engagement and programming on student well-being.
- Hire, train, and supervise DEI Program Coordinators working with signature student programs, such as Thrive Mentorship Program for Students of Color, the Real Talk Dialogue Series, and the Leadership, Exploration, and Discovery (LEAD) Pre-Orientation program.
- Develop the curriculum, and handle all the logistics for this optional three-day LEAD Pre-Orientation program for international, first generation, and students of color.
- Serve as a key member of the Bias Incident Response team in addressing bias related incidents between and among students.
- Maintain standards of best practices for DEI as outlined by national higher education professional associations (including but limited to ACPA, NASPA, NADOHE, LACRELA, etc.)
- Partner with the VP and AVP of DEI to design and implement DEIB programming in response to relevant global, national, and local events.
- Partner with Resident Fellows and Resident Advisors to develop programming and services that supports and advances well-being and DEI initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree is required.
- Demonstrated success engaging and collaborating with people representing diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to interact with sensitivity and discretion when engaging challenging issues, facilitating difficult conversations.
- Uphold College policies, procedures and bylaws and help students/student groups to do so.
- Possess an entrepreneurial spirit and creative initiative to take on new projects and identify opportunities for innovation.
- Build relationships with students, faculty, and staff from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, perspectives, beliefs, and experiences.
- Live in residence and serve as a part of a five-person, rotating, on-call team.
- Able and willing to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree in higher education, college personnel administration, or related field preferred.
Requirements for Employment
Effective October 15, 2021, all employees of Sarah Lawrence College must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
