MECHANIC II
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision this position performs diagnostic tests, basic preventive maintenance and required repairs for vehicles and mobile equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides cordial, responsive and accurate customer service.
Operates hand, motorized and electrical tools.
Repairs and replaces vehicle tires.
Performs basic preventive maintenance for diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment such as changing fluids, filters, and checking the function of defined systems.
Cleans and maintains shop facilities and equipment.
Performs routine and major mechanical and electrical repairs to both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and mobile equipment.
Performs repairs to metal and fiberglass bodies of County vehicles and equipment.
Paints vehicles and equipment.
Using electrical and/or electronic diagnostic equipment, assesses functionality or problems with vehicle and equipment engines and operating systems and recommends course of appropriate repairs.
Test-drives vehicles.
Assists in training new mechanics.
Assists in maintaining parts and supply inventory.
Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to use a wide variety of hand, pneumatic and power tools; diagnose the cause of a limited number of mechanical problems and select appropriate and most effective means for repairing identified problems; use electrical and gas welding equipment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License issued by the Maryland MVA (or equivalent), or the ability to obtain such a license within 180 days after employment to the position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A High School Diploma, GED or certificate of graduation from a vocational technical training school with concentration on automobile and heavy equipment mechanics and three (3) years of related experience as an automobile, farm or heavy equipment mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Regularly required to stand, walk and use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
Requires regular lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, if frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and is exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works with flammable materials, may be exposed to risk of disease or infection and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
