About the Department:

As an integral part of the most diverse university in Virginia, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers fifteen foreign languages and a wide variety of courses in language, literature, film, and translation, from the introductory, to the advanced and graduate levels. The Department of Modern and Classical Languages is home to a diverse and collegial faculty committed to promoting diversity and exclusivity through excellence in research and instruction and in service to the university and the community. In addition, with close proximity to the nation's capital, students wishing to learn about foreign languages have the opportunity to participate in year-round cultural activities at the national and international level. We provide students with a rich background in their chosen program, focusing on language skills, cultural knowledge, and knowledge of language structure and literature.

The rewarding Russian program at Mason offers a minor in Russian language as well as study abroad programs and scholarship opportunities. Mason's Russian program is also an integral component of the interdisciplinary B.A. Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies.

About the Position:

Teach Russian language courses at all undergraduate levels as well as courses in Russian literature, translation, film and media. Additional responsibilities include holding regular office hours, participating in curricular development for the Russian program, department service and extracurricular activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree in a related field;
  • A Ph.D. in Russian Literature, Film and Media, Linguistics, or another related field at the time of appointment; and
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Russian.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching Russian at the undergraduate level;
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching courses that incorporate historical perspective on Russian language and literature and courses that address issues of empire, socio-economic and cultural diversity, film, and new media;
  • Familiarity with curriculum design;
  • Demonstrated interest in mentoring students and student activities; and
  • Demonstrated interest in the creation and implementation of online courses, as well as incorporating technology into the classroom.
